Vetro Murrino da Altino a Murano

A major exhibition is divided into two venues - the National Archaeological Museum of Altino and the Glass Museum of Murano - compares the production techniques of murrine glass, marked by extraordinary outcome realization, developed in Roman times (in Veneto) and later taken to Murano, in the late nineteenth century, after centuries of oblivion and survived to our days.

The technique of murrina essentially consists in the hot melt of glass tessere monochrome or polychrome, such as the so-called millefiori, in order to obtain plates, plates, bowls. Already in the first century A.D. certain varieties of murrine plates were sometimes collected with the blow pipe, to be more easily molded into Balsamar or deep container. This happened in Murano shortly after the recovery of archaeological and this technique is often adopted in practice by the best teachers and most demanding designers. Then the Venetian glassmakers were the XIX, XX and XXI century to develop the best combination of technology with murrine-blowing, with extraordinary results both from a technical and aesthetic. This recovery opened new horizons for them. At the National Archaeological Museum of Altino are offered a wide and varied overview of glasses murrini found in archaeological excavations in Altino and the vast territory north-eastern Adriatic, largely corresponding to ancient X Regio, Venetia et Istria, who owned the business relationship cultural and privileged contacts with the eastern shores of the Mediterranean, the birthplace of art glass. These works glassmaking, probably imported from the East or local production, which testify to the sophistication and high standard of living of Roman Venetia and the public interest of its people for this particular technique and their propensity for glass hard colored. Particularly significant, particularly noteworthy are the findings from Aquileia, the largest town within the Royal X for Roman glass production Adriatic.
