AMERICA'S CUP

Staging the America’s Cup in Venice as a biannual event was the idea of the Municipality of Venice, and its mayor, Giorgio Orsoni, and was made possible by the support of the organising committee headed by Thetis.

The project pairs the world’s oldest yachting race with its most beautiful city; a city whose outstanding beauty becomes a natural backdrop, sailing area and exceptional venue. The project is scheduled to start on 12 May when these maritime “Formula 1” racing yachts will commence to ply the lagoon’s waters.

The World Series comprises an intense series of competitions and races in which racing yachts and skippers compete for the Louis Vuitton Cup. The cup’s winner will then go on to challenge the USA team Oracle, the holder of the America’s Cup.

In 2013 the event will acquire even greater importance for Venice as the lagoon will be the last race venue before the Louis Vuitton Cup (to take place in San Francisco). Unlike the 2012 edition, the boats will arrive in the lagoon one month earlier, with races scheduled in April.

In 2013 crews sailing AC72s, futuristic, 22 m-long, rigid wingsail catamarans will be putting to sea. These yachts will replace the AC45s, the yachts competing in the 2012 leg.

The America’s Cup project in Venice combines the tradition and history of the city and of yacht racing with boat technology as well as engineering work for safeguarding the lagoon and promoting environmental sustainability, which is part and parcel of both sailing and the city’s life. This is a unique combination that only Venice can produce, and which makes it the most desirable city in the world.

Some of the events of the World Series of the America’s Cup have already taken place in Cascais (Portugal), Plymouth (Great Britain), San Diego (USA) and in April 2012 they were in Naples.
